"In the Slow Blink of an Alligator's Eye Wetlands Vanish" is an oral history and awareness project to preserve the heritage of Louisiana's wetlands launched in five middle schools in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes in the 2010 school year.
The project incorporates an accelerated wetlands science and social studies curriculum with strong emphasis on experiential learning in and out of the classroom.
• Students explore their cultural heritage in the wetlands and how their culture is defined both by the fragility of its landscape and the abundance of its natural resources. • Though an intense cultural emersion process, students learn about tradition bearers and how their unique culture is passed down from one generation to the next. • Building upon the curriculum of Earth and Physical Sciences and Louisiana History students use cultural exploration and scientific discovery to define the relationship between man and the land in the Louisiana wetlands. |
