the new orleans cemetery database
preserving the past
Welcome to the New Orleans Cemetery Database, an online resource providing free access to digitized versions of cemetery-related records housed at The Historic New Orleans Collection. The information presented is part of an expanding collection of resources that will allow searching of the data contained in the Survey of Historic New Orleans Cemeteries—including names engraved on tombs, historical and contemporary condition reports, and photographs—and provide a guide to published, archival, and digital cemetery resources available from various authors, repositories, and institutions.
Currently available for viewing are the 1981 cemetery surveys of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 and St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 produced by The Historic New Orleans Collection and Save Our Cemeteries and additional condition reports from a survey of St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 produced by the University of Pennsylvania's historic preservation graduate program in 2010-2012.
This multi-phase project involves collaboration among The Historic New Orleans Collection, Tulane University, and Save Our Cemeteries. This project is supported by the École nationale des chartes in Paris, the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Funding for the project was made possible through the generosity of Mary Louise Mossy Christovich in establishing the Christovich Excellence Fund for Historic Preservation and in partnership with Tulane School of Architecture's Master of Preservation Studies program and Tulane University Law School.
