Introduced to the US in 1887, the safety was a chain-driven bicycle with wheels of equal size, similar to the modern bicycle. The safety generated a much wider interest in the sport, and models featuring “drop” or step-through frames that could better accommodate skirts and dresses were especially popular among women. In New Orleans, by the late 1880s, women were riding in excursions organized by the Louisiana Cycling Club, attending events at its clubhouse, and becoming some of the most passionate fans at club races.
