The Louisiana Cycling Club formally opened a new clubhouse on August 23, 1890, at 1637 Octavia Street off of St. Charles Avenue. The site was “in the center of the best roads in the city—those to Carrollton, to West End and to Canal Street,” according to a newspaper write-up. “The location combines at once the advantages of room, isolation from influences which might keep members from the healthy shades of the club, and fine country air.” The clubhouse hosted frequent “smokers”—parties held exclusively for men—and “Ladies’ Nights” for mixed company.
