Presented annually in the month of December by the New Orleans Photo Alliance, PhotoNOLA celebrates photography in New Orleans with exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and more. This year, the festival will kick off with the launch of The Historic New Orleans Collection’s latest publication, Louisiana Lens: Photographs from The Historic New Orleans Collection. Author John H. Lawrence, who built THNOC’s extensive photographic collection over the course of his four-decade career with the institution, will be joined by Jeff L. Rosenheim, Joyce F. Menschel Curator in Charge of the Department of Photographs for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for a lively conversation about the history of photography in New Orleans.

About the Book

Louisiana Lens
celebrates the achievement of one of America’s leading photography curators with works ranging from early daguerreotypes of city landmarks to born-digital photographs documenting the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Author John H. Lawrence, who spent four decades building THNOC’s photographic collection, traces the development of the medium alongside the growth and change of New Orleans and Louisiana over nearly two centuries. This volume serves as both a capstone of Lawrence’s career and an invaluable survey of Louisiana photography.
