New Orleans Bracket Bash - Film Favorites Edition

Welcome to the New Orleans Bracket Bash, where New Orleans’s cultural touchstones—songs, movies, food, buildings, characters from history—come to meet and compete. Champion: A Streetcar Named Desire

Our "Film Favorites" tournament pitted fan favorites against some overlooked movies from Louisiana’s more than 100 years of filmography, chosen in honor of THNOC's new virtual exhibition From Cameo to Close-up. At the end of the five-round contest, A Streetcar Named Desire was crowned champion, and the movie will go on to be the subject of a #NolaMovieNight group re-watch in August 2020.

Among the 32 entries in the tournament, Streetcar received the most nominations from you. Kathleen wrote that the film “made New Orleans an iconic place.” Guy noted that, even though the movie wasn’t filmed here, “New Orleans was a constant presence and a hovering character.” Our own Senior Curator Mark Cave declared that “Streetcar is by far the best film with a New Orleans setting... Even though it was not filmed on location it played a large role in creating how the city was and is perceived by people throughout the world.”
