Join us at the Shop at the Collection for a book signing with Matthew Haines, author of The Big Book of King Cake and The Little Book of King Cake. Both books will be available at the Shop for purchase, in addition to king cakes from a number of notable New Orleans bakeries.
In April 2017, Matt Haines began walking from Georgia to Maine along the Appalachian Trail. He had never written professionally before then, but when he finished that 159-day, 2,189.7-mile hike, Haines went back to New Orleans and decided to give it a shot.
Since then, Haines has written for local publications such as The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate, Gambit Weekly, Very Local New Orleans and GoNOLA.com, as well as technology companies like Align and nonprofit organizations such as 504ward. National clients I have written for include The New York Times, Voice of America, Lonely Planet, CNN Underscored, Zagat, Fodor's Travel, Rosetta Stone, Great Big Story and AlltimePower.
He is the author of The Big Book of King Cake, the first-ever coffee table book dedicated to king cake, featuring 75 of his favorite Carnival cakes, as well as the diverse and talented bakers who make them.
"I once ate more than eighty king cakes in a single Carnival," author Matt Haines proudly remembers, demonstrating his dedication to this delicious Mardi Gras tradition. "So you can imagine how amazed I was to learn there has never been a book dedicated to king cakes!"
The Big Book of King Cake changes that with 368 pages of beautiful photography featuring more than one hundred and fifty unique king cakes, as well as stories from the diverse and talented bakers who make them.
The Little Book of King Cake is the story of Miley, a third grader who has to bring a king cake to school. But what king cake should she bring? There are so many types to choose from, it makes her want to cry!
With the help of a giant, flying baby and a team of talking pastries, Miley visits some of New Orleans’ favorite bakeries searching for the perfect king cake and hoping to discover the answer to that most important of Mardi Gras questions: what makes king cake special?
