Join us at the Shop at the Collection for a special book signing with Brian K. Mitchell, lead author of Monumental: Oscar Dunn and His Radical Fight in Reconstruction Louisiana. Published by HNOC in 2021, Monumental is an award-winning graphic history telling the story of Oscar Dunn, a New Orleanian born into slavery who became America’s first Black lieutenant governor and acting governor.

Admission is free and open to the public. Copies of Monumental will be available for purchase at the Shop during the signing.

The day after the book signing, on Saturday, June 27, Mitchell—a descendant of Oscar Dunn—will participate in a ceremony celebrating Dunn’s 1868 inauguration and legacy. The event will be hosted by the Oscar J. Dunn Masonic Lodge #85 P.H.A. at 9 a.m. at St. James A.M.E. Church, followed by a memorial service at St. Louis Cemetery No. 2—historic locations where Dunn was a parishioner and later buried.
