THNOC will host two Prospect.4 exhibitions of contemporary photography--one by the late Tony Gleaton and the other by Monique Verdin--mounted in THNOC's Laura Simon Nelson Galleries.

Gleaton, who passed away in 2015, began his career as a fashion photographer in New York but left the industry to travel through the Southwest, where he photographed rodeo riders, ranch hands, and cowboys. He was particularly interested in the experiences of Native Americans and black cowboys. This work eventually took him to a remote region of Mexico, Costa Chica, where many of the residents are descendants of enslaved Africans who were brought to this area during the Spanish colonial era. Gleaton lived with them off and on for several years, and the work he produced became the basis for the exhibition Africa's Legacy in Mexico, which toured the US, Mexico, and Cuba. Prospect.4 will exhibit work from both that show and Cowboys: Reconstructing an American Myth.

Verdin, a native of southeastern Louisiana, works to document the Houma nation and the changing landscape of the Mississippi Delta region. Her documentary, My Louisiana Love, captures her family and community as they face Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The exhibition showcases a collection of her photographs as well as a palmetto tapestry interwoven with photographic images.

Both exhibitions are on view through February 25, 2018. In addition, the displays will be open Sunday, December 10, and Sunday, February 25, from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
